Avenal Project Quick Facts
|
Project OverviewNRG Solar, a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc., has partnered with Eurus Energy America to build a 45 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) generating facility in Kings County, California. Consisting of three separate projects—Avenal Park, Sun City and Sand Drag—the combined output of the Avenal projects will generate enough power to meet the needs of 36,000 homes cleanly and efficiently. The projects were developed by Eurus and are owned jointly by Eurus and NRG. The Avenal projects are located on a 500-acre site near the City of Avenal, just off Interstate 5 about 75 miles north of Bakersfield, Calif. Once operational, the facility will produce clean, renewable electricity that will be sold to Pacific Gas & Electric under 20-year power purchase agreements. Work on the projects is currently under way, and NRG Solar anticipates completion in mid-2011, helping the state achieve its short-term goals for greater renewable power and advancing California's progress significantly toward achieving its stated target of 33% renewable power generation by 2020. NRG Solar is developing two complementary technologies—photovoltaics and solar thermal—and owns a 21 MW solar facility in Blythe, Calif., one of the first large-scale solar plants built in the United States since 1990. Altogether, NRG Solar has more than 2,000 MW of solar projects under development or in construction across the southwestern United States. NRG Energy, Inc. is a Fortune 500 and S&P 500 Index company that is one of the industry's largest providers of electricity and the nation's largest developer of solar power. With diverse generation resources totaling nearly 25,000 megawatts, NRG is able to power almost 20 million homes and our retail operations provide electricity to 1.8 million customers.
