Project Overview

NRG Energy, Inc., through its wholly owned subsidiary, NRG Solar, is the lead investor, along with Google, BrightSource Energy and other investors in the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, which will be the largest solar thermal project in the world when completed in mid-2013. At 392 megawatts (MW), Ivanpah will nearly double the amount of commercial solar thermal energy now generated in the United States.

The Ivanpah project, comprised of three separate plants to be built in phases, has begun construction in southeastern California's Mojave Desert on federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The project received a $1.6 billion conditional commitment from the U.S. Department of Energy for a loan guarantee, and has all necessary permits and approvals to begin cionstruction.

Electricity from Ivanpah will be sold under multiple power purchase agreements, each of 20-25 years duration with Southern California Edison and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. The electricity generated by all three plants is enough to serve more than 140,000 homes in California during the peak hours of the day.

Ivanpah is the first large-scale solar thermal plant to be built in California in 20 years, supporting California's goal of 33% renewable power generation by 2020. The project also provides a boost to the local economy by creating 1,000 construction jobs at its peak and 86 operations and maintenance jobs.

NRG Solar is developing two complementary technologies—photovoltaics and solar thermal—and owns a 21 MW solar facility in Blythe, Calif., one of the first large-scale solar plants built in the United States since 1990. Altogether, NRG Solar has more than 2,000 MW of solar projects under development or in construction across the southwestern United States.

NRG Energy, Inc. is a Fortune 500 and S&P 500 Index company that is one of the industry's largest providers of electricity and the nation's largest developer of solar power. With diverse generation resources totaling more than 25,000 megawatts, NRG is able to power more than 20 million homes and our retail operations provide electricity to nearly two million customers.

Project Benefits

  • Clean, renewable generation will avoid the emission of 400,000 tons of carbon into the atmosphere
  • Will create 1,000 construction jobs in the next three years and 86 operations and maintenance jobs
  • Utilizes dry cooling for steam condensing, which minimizes water consumption
  • Efficient and clean solar power is available for up to 140,000 homes during peak demand on the hottest summer days
  • Helps California meet renewable energy goals
