Roadrunner Project
|
| Project Size: 20 MW (photovoltaic) |
| Power Purchaser: El Paso Electric |
| Anticipated Completion: 2012 |
NRG Energy, through its wholly owned subsidiary NRG Solar, is building the 20 megawatt (MW) Roadrunner Solar Project, which is on track to be one of the first large-scale solar projects built in New Mexico and one of the largest photovoltaic (PV) projects in the state. Cost-competitive, renewable power generated by the facility will be sold to El Paso Electric under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
The project is located in southern New Mexico in Doña Ana County on industrial-zoned land in a rural setting and within close proximity to the existing electric distribution system. The Roadrunner Solar Project is estimated to use less than 200 acre-feet* of water (predominantly for dust suppression) during the construction period and only two acre-feet per year for panel washing during operation.
The project provides the State of New Mexico with a new source of renewable energy to assist in achieving Renewable Portfolio Standards and solar diversity goals, while boosting the local economy by creating up to 240 construction jobs. By generating clean renewable energy and avoiding any of the carbon emissions that would be produced by a fossil-fueled power plant, the Roadrunner Solar Project will contribute to cleaner air and result in a smaller carbon footprint for the state.
NRG Solar started construction in December 2010 and anticipates completion of the Roadrunner Solar Project by September 2011.
NRG Solar is developing two complementary technologies—photovoltaics and solar thermal—and owns a 21 MW solar facility in Blythe, Calif., one of the first large-scale solar plants built in the United States since 1990. Altogether, NRG Solar has more than 2,000 MW of solar projects under development or in construction across the southwestern United States.
NRG Energy, Inc. is a Fortune 500 and S&P 500 Index company that is one of the industry's largest providers of electricity and the nation's largest developer of solar power. With diverse generation resources totaling more than 25,000 megawatts, NRG is able to power more than 20 million homes and our retail operations provide electricity to nearly two million customers.
